Abstract:
The data consist of 20 themes developed by the U.S. Geological Survey Helena Office in cooperation with the Montana Department of State Lands and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and published as U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 90-568. The report is included as a PDF document with the State Library data distribution package and from the USGS at http://pubs.er.usgs.gov/pubs/ofr/ofr90568.

These data were provided to the State Library in ESRI coverage format and UTM coordinates. Many of the themes were divided into small regional sections, and some themes were divided into several coverages that were only different from each other in that the features in each one had a different value for one attribute. The Library projected the data to State Plane coordinates, converted the data to shapefiles, combined the regional sections, and combined groups of similar coverages into a individual feature classes.

The following layers and information are included in the distribution:

Abandoned Mines
Data from the Montana Department of State Lands, with mine names and types.

Aquifer Base Elevations
For three different aquifers there are two layers. One contains isolines for the aquifer base elevation at a 250-foot interval and the other contains polygons formed by the isolines with an attribute giving the base elevation range. The aquifers are Fox Hills-Hells Creek, Tullock, and Tongue River-Wasatch.

Aquifer Thickness
For three different aquifers there are two layers. One contains isolines for the aquifer thickness at a 100-foot interval and the other contains polygons formed by the isolines with an attribute giving the thickness range. The aquifers are Fox Hills-Hells Creek, Tullock, and Tongue River-Wasatch.

Coal Overburden Chemistry
Locations of sample sites with compilation of coal overburden saturated paste analyses. Each location has maximum and minimum or median values for specific conductance, pH, calcium, and sodium. There are three layers numbered 1, 2, and 3 that contain results for the overburden above up to 3 coal beds in each drill hole.

Coal Fields And Reserves
Polygons showing areas of strippable coal. The metadata document contains explanations of the coal field codes and the millions of tons of reserves in each coal bed.

Coal Sample Data
Location of coal samples with name of coal bed and lab results for ash content, sulfur content, and BTU heating value.

Coal Stratigraphy
Location of drill holes and outcrops with identification of up to three coal beds and their depth and thickness at each location.

Designated Valley Floors
These regions were delineated in six hydrolgic studies that were done between 1979 and 1985 for deposited with the Montana Department of State Lands in association with mine permits.

Pollutant Discharge Permits
Point locations of pollutant discharge permits issued by the Montana Water Quality Bureau.

Geologic Fault Lines
Fault lines from USGS Miscellaneous Investigations Map I-847-D, 1978, Geology and water-yeilding characteristics of rocks of the norther Powder River Basin.

100-year Floodplains
Flood plain polygons deleveloped by the USGS Water Resources Division.

Bedrock Geology
Polygons showing bedrock formations from USGS Miscellaneous Investigations Map I-847-D, 1978, Geology and water-yeilding characteristics of rocks of the norther Powder River Basin.

Ground Water Quality Samples
Sample locations with lab results for specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, calcium, sodium, potassium, sulfate, chloride, fluoride, and dissolved solids.

Public Land Survey Lines
Township, Range, and Section lines and plss section polygons, digitized from 1:24,000 scale USGS topographic maps.

Potential Alluvial Valley Floors
Areas identified on U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement 1985 reconnaissance maps.

Precipitation Isolines
Isolines of annual precipitation developed by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service at a 2-inch interval, and polygons formed by the isolines with an attribute giving the precipitation range.

Precipitation Stations
Locations of precipitation stations with monthly and annual mean values for 1951-1980 and annual mean values for 1941-1970.

Streamflow Stations
Locations of USGS stream flow stations with annual and monthly mean, max, and minimum flow rates, estimated peak flows for 100, 50, 25, 10, 5, and 2 years, and flows that are equaled 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 percent of time.

Surface Water Quality Samples
Locations of USGS surface water quality samples with median lab results for specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sulfate, chloride, flouride, and dissolved solids.

Wells
Locations from the USGS WATSTORE database, with water use type, elevation, depth, water level, and discharge data.

The following layers that came with the report, primarily 1:100,000 scale USGS Digital Line Graph data, are available separately from the State Library archive at http://mslapps.mt.gov/Geographic_Information/Data/DataList/datalist_Details.aspx?did={ae0b2b03-c203-49dd-b294-8924cedbf8de}: county boundaries, national forest boundaries, Indian reservation boundaries, subbasin watersheds, geographic names, hydrography, land use from USGS GIRAS files, railroads, roads, and utility lines.
